Media Center Policies & Procedures for Teachers
The Media Center Handbook is a compilation of policies, procedures, and guidelines prepared by the media specialists to facilitate the use of educational media. We have developed this handbook to make teachers more aware of the services and materials available and the procedures used, thereby creating a more comfortable atmosphere for you and your classes.
Philosophy
The Library staff is committed to helping every student at Centennial High School gain a quality education. The library collection reflects the understanding that individuals differ in their mental and physical abilities, attitudes, needs, and interests.
Mission
The mission of the library media program of Centennial High School is to promote
literacy and the effective use of ideas and information for students and staff.
To this end, we have the responsibility for the following:
To develop a media center collection with print/non-print resources and technology in a variety of formats that support the
adopted Fulton County School curriculum.
To advocate the integration of learning activities across all content areas
To encourage collaboration between the media center staff and the instructional staff for the development, implementation and
evaluation of quality learning activities which increase student achievement.
Hours of Operation for Faculty
The Media Center is open from: 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday and 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
Circulation
Teachers may check out as many books, magazines, and audio visual materials as needed unless someone has asked that these materials be placed on reserve or if a large number of students need materials on the same subject.
Scheduling Classes
The sign up book for the Media Center is located on the circulation desk. Since resource-based teaching is one of the most effective teaching strategies, we encourage teachers to plan lessons with the media specialists throughout the year
Teachers MUST schedule their classes for the library at least one day in
advance and furnish a copy of your assignment before arriving with students. Do
not sign up for bringing your classes without consulting one of the media specialists first.
Since joint planning is required by state standards, class research projects
should be scheduled only after consulting with a librarian.
When your students are working on research projects in the library, state standards require the teacher to be available to render assistance and see that students are on task.
Please do not make lesson plans that require a substitute to work with a class in the library. Substitute teachers are NOT allowed to
bring classes to the library since research projects are much more effective if the assigned teacher, who knows the students, is present to guide and help to supervise the students.
Reference Check-Out
Teachers may check out reference materials for one school day or overnight. The current magazines and newspapers are to remain in the library. Old newspapers will be given to any teacher or student who asks for them. Back issues of magazines are kept for research.
Students Leaving Classroom to Use Library
Teachers may send up to five students to the library without signing up for a time. During instructional hours, students MUST have a readable, signed agenda/paper pass to come to the Media Center. Passes should include time, date, student(s) name and teacher signature. Students who wish to come to the media center during their lunchtime must get a lunch pass from the media center before their lunch period.
Services/Instruction
One of the primary tasks of media specialist is to instruct classes in library retrieval skills. This is most effective at the beginning of a research project, as we are able to tailor the instruction to each specific assignment.
*Research packets are available for students to purchase for $1.00
